The Best Celebrity Apartments in New York

For most people living in New York, finding a room with its own closet in a shared apartment is about as good as it gets. The thought of a walk-in closet, a balcony, or dare I say—actual outdoor space, is near unimaginable. But then there are the lucky famous few who manage to score the best properties in the city—spaces so large and immaculate that for a moment you could actually think that you’re staying at a grand estate in the English countryside as opposed to a Midtown townhouse. That is the greatest luxury…

Micro Apartments: Living like (Fancy) Sardines

When it comes to living space in New York, there is a clear tradeoff between quality and quantity. Or at least this is the best that one can hope for when the only other alternative is not more low quality space, but living in a tiny dump. Developers and architects are latching onto the idea of high quality tiny living spaces as several micro apartment unit projects are being developed throughout the city. My Micro NY, a micro apartment development slated to open later this year at 335 East 27th Street, is getting the…

Don’t Look! Apartments You Could Afford if You Didn’t Live in New York

Searching for an apartment in New York can be a stressful ordeal, especially if you are on a limited budget. Sometimes if you’re feeling really down in the dumps about your apartment search and are mildly masochistic, it can be fun to look at your current budget for rent in New York and imagine what sort of apartment this much money would buy you elsewhere in the world. This is even more painful now given the strong dollar. For example, say you have about $700 a month to spend on rent in New York….

The Real Cost (and Uncertainty) of Public Schooling in New York City

There are a lot of things to consider when searching for an apartment to rent or buy in New York City: location, home or rental prices, amenities, and if you are a parent—the quality of local public schools. New York parents are notorious for going to what would seem like insane lengths anywhere else in the country to secure a spot for their offspring in the top schools, sometimes before their children are even born! Here we’ll discuss the best public schools, the “cost” of accessing them (which depends on what you’re willing to sacrifice…),…

The Most Colorful Apartment in New York

Are you looking for a show stopper of an apartment with views of Central Park? Do you have a penchant for brocade, wallpaper, bright colors and $24 million in the bank? Then look no further than this Fifth Avenue co-op which laughs unabashedly in the face of modern minimalist décor. Beginning with the building itself, 1060 Fifth Avenue was designed by JER Carpenter, the architect behind many of New York’s most well-known luxury residential buildings. It’s a pre-war construction that finished in 1928 and was converted to a co-op in 1953. The façade is…

$539 Apartments Available in East Harlem

In a city where the average rental price is $3,129, looking for an apartment is enough to make you want to curl up and cry in a corner, and that’s before you even started actually doing walk-throughs of places, which can be a nightmare in and of itself. So what if you could get a place that’s less than $1,000 per month? No, that’s not the lack of coffee talking, there’s currently studio apartments up for grabs in Harlem that are just $539 a month. There’s no broker’s fee involved, and although prospective residents…

Furnished Quarters – 66 Franklin Street Unit 3C

Furnished Quarters provides it’s customers with furnished apartments for short term rentals. They asked me to photograph one of their units at 66 Franklin Street. All of their units are fully decorated, and feature wi-fi, televisions, full kitchen, etc. They offer an alternative to the traditional hotel experience, which is why a lot of their sales are corporate housing and relocations. This particular unit utilized wood surfaces really nicely in the decor. It is always more pleasant to photograph something like this because it is much less sterile and allows potential customers to get that “homey” feel.  …
